I'm a little slow on the uptake but just found out that legendary rapper Guru passed away last week after a lengthy battle with cancer. As one half of Gangstarr, Keith Elam produced some of the greatest and most memorable hip-hop of the last 20 odd years. Whilst US hip-hop has generally declined into commercalised R&B/club anthems Guru has managed to uphold a sense of originality and preserve the story-telling skills that are the sign of a great rapper, for me at least.
Here's a few of my favourite Guru tracks...apologies if all the videos take a while to load
And the link if you click the title to this post should take you to DJ Premier's blog (the other half of Gangstarr) where he has put together a great mixtape of Guru's best work which is available for free download. Well worth a go for any hip-hop lovers
